The SSSB Development League is a new initiative designed to strengthen grassroots basketball across Hampshire by creating more opportunities for young players to train, compete, and develop within a structured and supportive environment.

Developed through collaboration between Bitterne Bucks, New Forest Timberwolves, Portchester Trailblazers, and Southampton Suns, the league is focused on increasing participation and providing a clear pathway for players of all abilities to experience competitive basketball.

Our Vision

The SSSB Development League was created to address a key challenge in youth sport — ensuring that players have access to meaningful competition while they are still learning and developing.

Our vision is to:

• Grow basketball participation across Hampshire and surrounding areas

• Provide a bridge between training sessions and formal league basketball

• Create an inclusive environment where players of all abilities can compete

• Support long-term athlete development, not just short-term results

• Build confidence, teamwork, and understanding of the game

• Strengthen connections between community clubs to grow the sport together

Why a Development League?

Many young athletes train regularly but do not yet have access to the right level of competition. Traditional leagues can sometimes be too advanced for beginners, which can discourage participation.

The Development League:

• Introduces competition in a positive, learning-focused setting

• Allows players to apply skills learned in training into real game situations

• Encourages equal involvement, development time, and progression

• Reduces pressure while maintaining the excitement of competitive basketball

• Helps retain players in the sport by making the experience enjoyable and accessible

This approach ensures that more players stay engaged and continue their basketball journey.

A major goal of the league is simple — get more young people playing competitive basketball.

By delivering regular fixtures between local clubs, we:

• Increase the number of games available to developing players

• Provide localised competition to reduce travel barriers

• Encourage new players to join community programmes

• Offer a clear stepping stone into Local League and National League pathways

The league supports players at the stage where confidence, game understanding, and enjoyment are most important.
